Given the SEC’s dominance of football this century, with 14 national championships won in the sport in 23 years of the 21st century and some of the greatest names in the sport’s history coming from the southeastern corner of the country, it’s worth wondering which member of the conference has stood tallest in the back stretch of the season.
Given the fact that three SEC members (Alabama, Georgia and LSU) are among the winningest CFB teams overall in the last 10 years, it’s likely of no surprise to learn that that trio are at the top of the conference’s October winning percentage leaderboard.
This year, oddsmakers at Bet365 have UGA as the odds-on favorite to win the SEC, at +160, while newcomer Texas is second at +260 and the Crimson Tide are third, sitting at +550 through Week 2 of the college football calendar.
BetGeorgia.com, your home to all news around the future of Georgia sports betting, wanted to see how SEC teams do when stacked up against one another for win-loss percentages during the 10th month of the year. Using Sports-Reference.com, we found the average win-loss percentage for each team during the month of October over the past five full seasons (excluding 2020).
Note: Not all teams were in the SEC during this time period.
Rank | Team | Average W-L% |
1 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 90.0% |
2 | Georgia Bulldogs | 86.67% |
3 | LSU Tigers | 73.3% |
4 | Oklahoma Sooners | 71.67% |
5 | Ole Miss Rebels | 68.0% |
6 | Tennessee Volunteers | 60.0% |
7 | Texas Longhorns | 56.67% |
8 | Florida Gators | 55.0% |
9 | Mississippi State Bulldogs | 51.67% |
T10 | Texas A&M Aggies | 48.3% |
T10 | Missouri Tigers | 48.3% |
12 | Kentucky Wildcats | 41.67% |
13 | South Carolina Gamecocks | 36.67% |
14 | Auburn Tigers | 35.0% |
15 | Arkansas Razorbacks | 20.0% |
16 | Vanderbilt Commodores | 15.67% |
Out of 16 teams that now call the SEC home, only the Crimson Tide have a better October winning percentage than UGA’s figure of 86.67%, with Alabama sitting at 90% over the last five years.
Georgia wound up ahead of LSU, which has won 73.3% of the Tigers’ October contests during the period in question, while former Big 12 stalwart Oklahoma (71.67%) and Ole Miss (68%) round out the SEC top five for October.
On the other side of the success spectrum, SEC cellar dwellers like Vanderbilt (15.67%), Arkansas (20%) and Auburn (35%) have seen the least success of the 16 teams in today’s SEC in October, speaking to the gulf between the most successful conference in modern CFB’s haves and have-nots in the brave new world of amateur football.
